Honest Impression: Cirque du Soleil – Drawn to Life

Drawn to life poster

Earlier this month, I attended the Cirque du Soleil Drawn to Life show with friends and family. Now for those of you who don’t know me (which is all of you really), I am a 40ish mom of an energetic little boy. I figured this would be a perfect activity to do with him during our short vacation.

When I first visited Disney Springs last year, I saw a big poster advertising Drawn to Life. Right away I promised myself that I would come back specifically to attend this show! I must tell you that I am from Montreal (Canada) which is the actual birthplace of Cirque du Soleil! I had seen some of their shows before, so I knew what to expect. Nothing but the utmost best quality!!! Moreover, being a Disney kid myself, and having the hungriest appetite for everything magical, beautiful, and inspiring made this show a no-brainer for me. So I bought the tickets in advance for my family and my friends who were traveling with us to ensure there was no turning back! Unfortunately at the last minute, my precious son decided he would not attend. He would stay home and play with his little cousin instead…grrrrr fine, whatever! As for me, I was going to go come rain or shine!

At Last

So fast forward a year later, and here I am, rushing to get to the Cirque du Soleil building at Disney Springs because hubby miscalculated the time (tsk tsk tsk). At last, we reached the theater…only 5mins late! But because the show had already started we were not able to get to our seats yet. We had to wait for the 1st act to end. And of course, we couldn’t see anything from where we were standing. Btw I am almost 6 feet tall, you would think for once my height would have been useful! Can any of you guess the level of my frustration at that point!!?

Anyways, a few minutes later, the first act was done and we were brought to our seats. Excellent seats I must say, no complaint there. Ok, my mood was lightening! Maybe the night was not ruined after all?

…well folks, I am happy to say that not only was my night not ruined but it was one of the best nights of my trip! The little girl in me sang, danced, did triple flips, and much more that night! The show was funny, sad, scary, and even romantic at times!!! What more could I have possibly asked for!? I was totally glued to my seat the whole time. For 90 minutes straight, I traveled back to my childhood and engaged in the storyline pretty much from the moment I was comfortably seated. I didn’t even bother to look to see if the kids in our group were entertained, I was in my element, not wishing to be disturbed!

Synopsis

In case you were wondering what the show is about, take a look at following the synopsis:

“This new show follows the story of Julie, a courageous and determined girl who discovers an unexpected gift left by her late father: an unfinished animation piece. Guided by a surprising pencil, she embarks on an inspiring quest sprinkled with her Disney childhood memories. Through this journey, she will learn to imagine new possibilities and animate the story of her future.

Drawn to Life transports guests into the world of Disney animation in Cirque du Soleil’s signature style. This entirely new Orlando experience will wow Walt Disney World guests and Cirque du Soleil fans, both young and old, while bringing timeless Disney stories to life in an unforgettable new way.”

Once the show was done, I finally asked the 2 little boys how they liked it. One said that like me, he too was glued to his seat from beginning to end. The other however loved it in the beginning but started to get fidgety after a while. He felt it was too long for his liking. Being a little boy who loves thrilling rides and lots of action, I can understand where he comes from. All this to say different strokes for different folks!

This has got me thinking: who was this show designed for exactly? My guess is for Disney kids like me and for people who believe in the power of the imagination. Mind you even people like my dear husband who actually doesn’t fall into either of those categories appreciated the show. But I don’t think he was able to truly take in the beauty of it all like I did.

All in all, it was beautiful and I do recommend it to people who like this sort of whimsical, immersive experience. But for little kids who are more drawn to video games and adults who tend to fall asleep when put in a dark room (yes there was one in our little group!), maybe that’s not the best activity to schedule…
